How to incorporate antiques into modern homes

Art is in the eye of the beholder, therefore there are no hard and fast rules, and it comes down to personal taste.

Antiques are objects that are generally 100 years or more, and any items that are older than only 20 years fall into the vintage area.

Decorating with antiques amalgamating the old world with our new modern lifestyle gives spaces and areas a richness of history. The quality of antiques is generally long-lasting which can be handed down from generation to generation due to the strength of the materials and craftsmanship they were crafted by at those times.

Simple and minimalistic spaces can be enhanced by a unique antique piece of ancient artwork or unique chair, or even a stylish table that can to add to the environment. Ceramics from vases, crockery placed on a tabletop can give the modern space some character.

The majority of antiques around that are functional are made from quality craftsmanship and were made to last, the fact they are antiques and still being utilised today. Compare to the cheap churned out items that are manufactured today which do not last.

When decorating or re-inventing a room or space, it is lovely to look around at antique stores to find that unique piece of furniture that will create a bit of flare or wow factor, giving the room some character.

I love some of the old glass antiques which are often large and have beautiful colourings, such as dark bottle green or lilacs or purples which can look amazing with a white or pale dining room or lounge and it becomes an eye-catching centrepiece.

Furniture can be placed in strategic places a feature in the room or blends in as part of the décor. Your décor can pick up the colour of the antique to blend in with the shades of the room.

A few of my takes on integrating antiques into modern-day homes:

Modern lounge suite, table and décor

and you can explore and hunt for antique frames and put all your beautiful family pictures up on a wall with a variety of eccentric antique-looking frames that would make an eye-catching piece.

Antiques are normally darker colours as they are natural woods that were darker from the older years. The saying “less is more” makes the antiques stand out otherwise they get lost if it is too much and it becomes overbearing.

Utilising a modern table with rustic chairs gives your place an eclectic look, similarly a rustic table with modern chairs.

The contrast of antiques blended with modern living can create character without filling your house with too many antiques thus creating a museum, antiques need to be part of the living space displaying comfortable and attractive areas in your home.
